The Ohio Senate has passed Senate Bill 60, legislation sponsored by State Senator Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green), aimed at addressing the mental health crisis in the state. The bill proposes the creation of a new licensed healthcare professional category known as Certified Mental Health Assistants (CMHAs). These professionals will address workforce shortages in the mental health care field, with specific education and clinical requirements, practicing under physician supervision to support patients.

"This first-of-its-kind profession will give more Ohioans access to exceptional care and services while giving a new generation the tools they need to enter a field with high demand," Gavarone stated. "Senate Bill 60 will directly alleviate burdens on our mental health system for generations to come."

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, Ohio is projected to have only 1,060 psychiatrists by 2030, which is 52% of the number required. Currently, millions of Ohioans in 43 counties live in areas experiencing a shortage of mental health professionals.

Senate Bill 60 now moves to the Ohio House for further consideration.
