State Representative Haraz N. Ghanbari (R-Perrysburg) announced that September marks the official start of Ohio’s fall hunting season. The season opens on September 1, 2025, for several species, including squirrel (fox, red, and gray), dove, rail (Virginia and sora), snipe, and gallinule. Early Canada goose and early teal seasons begin on September 6 and run through September 14. Deer archery season starts on September 27.
Ghanbari emphasized the importance of responsible hunting practices: “The opening day of hunting season is a time-honored tradition—celebrating not only the legal and responsible pursuit of game but also the stewardship of wildlife, the preservation of our natural heritage, and the continuation of Ohio’s rich outdoor legacy,” said Ghanbari. “All first-time hunting license buyers—excluding those purchasing an apprentice license—must successfully complete a hunter education course before obtaining a license. To everyone heading out this season: stay safe, and good luck.”
New legislation also affects hunters this year. House Bill 64 lowers the qualifying age for senior discounts on hunting, fishing, and other sportsmen licenses from 66 to 65 years old. The change takes effect on September 30, in time for deer hunting season.
