State Senator Theresa Gavarone | The Ohio Senate
State Senator Theresa Gavarone has announced that the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has allocated funds for critical bridge updates in the cities of Toledo and Norwalk. The City of Toledo will receive $1,622,107, while the City of Norwalk will receive $4,289,112.
Senator Gavarone expressed her enthusiasm for the funding, stating, "Both of these cities are receiving this funding for the first time, and they will use it to complete major construction projects that will benefit everyone in Lucas and Huron counties. This work will keep our local drivers and pedestrians safe on our roadways."
The City of Toledo plans to utilize its funding in fiscal year 2024 to update the Cherry Street lift bridge and install a new multi-use path over the Maumee River. On the other hand, Norwalk's funding will be used to rehabilitate the Linwood Avenue bridge. This project includes the replacement of the deck, construction of new sidewalks, railing, and vandal protection fencing. Preliminary engineering for the Linwood Avenue bridge project will take place in 2024, with construction expected to begin in fiscal year 2027.
The funding for these bridge projects is part of ODOT's Local Major Bridge Program, which aims to support various infrastructure improvements across Ohio. In total, ODOT will be awarding nearly $59.5 million to fund 17 bridge projects in 12 counties. These projects encompass a range of updates, such as lift bridge upgrades, deck replacements, new lighting and fencing, bridge design, road resurfacing, sidewalks, and mechanical and electrical system repairs.
ODOT has committed to funding up to 80% of eligible costs for all phases of the projects receiving awards. This financial support will enable local communities to enhance their infrastructure and ensure the safety of residents and travelers.
With these critical bridge projects underway, Ohio is taking proactive measures to maintain its transportation infrastructure. Senator Gavarone's announcement reflects the state's commitment to investing in the well-being and prosperity of its citizens.
