COLUMBUS—State Reps. Roy Klopfenstein (R-Haviland) and Angie King (R-Celina) have introduced a resolution condemning the People’s Republic of China for its role in the global drug trade. The resolution aims to shed light on the daily dangers faced by Ohioans and hopes to serve as a model for other states in addressing this pressing issue.
In a statement, Rep. Klopfenstein said, “While we doubt that this resolution will result in Xi Jinping or the Los Zheng cartel losing sleep, it is crucial to shed light on the daily dangers faced by Ohioans. Our aim is for Ohio to serve as a model for other states in addressing this pressing issue.”
Ohio has been plagued by the opioid crisis, with fentanyl overdose fatalities consistently ranking among the top 10 states. In 2020 alone, there were over four thousand reported fatalities, representing a 32% increase from the previous year. Rep. King lamented, “Regrettably, this number continues to rise each year with over 90 percent of illicit fentanyl originating from China.”
The proposed legislation is currently awaiting a bill number and committee assignment. Ohio is taking a firm stand against the role of China in fueling the drug crisis and hopes that other states will follow suit.
