State Representative Jim Hoops (R-Napoleon) has voted in favor of House Concurrent Resolution 20, which honors the service of United States Navy personnel and marks the 250th anniversary of the Navy’s founding. The resolution was passed by the Ohio House and acknowledges both the establishment of the U.S. Navy on October 13, 1775, and Ohio’s significant naval heritage.

“Ohio has such a rich history of individuals who have served this country honorably,” said Rep. Hoops. “We formally express our gratitude for those men and women on this day, through this resolution.”

The resolution states: “That we, the members of the 136th General Assembly of the State of Ohio, honor the distinguished service and exceptional valor of the men and women of the United States Navy and commemorate the 250th anniversary of its founding.”

House Concurrent Resolution 20 highlights several notable Ohioans with naval backgrounds who have made contributions to both military service and space exploration. Among those mentioned are Lieutenant Neil A. Armstrong from Wapakoneta, a Naval aviator during the Korean War and first person to walk on the moon; Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr., from Cambridge, a Marine Corps aviator in World War II and Korea as well as first American to orbit Earth; Captain James A. Lovell, Jr., a Naval aviator involved in Apollo missions; Colonel Robert F. Overmyer from Lorain, a Marine aviator who served on Apollo support crews and as Space Shuttle commander; and Captain Sunita L. Williams from Euclid, recognized for her experience aboard the International Space Station.

Additionally, multiple U.S. Navy vessels have been named after cities or individuals from Ohio.

The resolution also points out that there are three active Navy Reserve Centers in Akron, Cincinnati, and Columbus which provide support to reserve units and sailors.
