State Representatives Roy Klopfenstein and Sean Patrick Brennan have introduced legislation that mandates schools to permit patriotic organizations to provide information to students. The bill covers organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, FFA, Civil Air Patrol, Boys and Girls Club of America, among others.
“These groups play a vital role in imparting civic and moral values, fostering robust leadership skills, and promoting personal development among our youth,” expressed Klopfenstein.
Under the proposed legislation, these organizations would be allowed to present information about their activities at least once per academic year, with schools having the discretion to determine the timing, location, and duration of the presentations. Additionally, organizations seeking to engage with students would need to undergo background checks similar to those required for teachers to ensure student safety.
“Teachers and administrators are bombarded with groups and individuals who want an audience with our students," mentioned Brennan. He added, “Our bill will assist our schools by requiring proper vetting of those requesting to present to students and, at the end of the day, will benefit our young learners by giving them access to quality opportunities.”
The bill, inspired by similar legislation in Indiana that received strong bipartisan support, is currently awaiting a bill number and committee assignment.
