State Senator Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) and State Senator Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville) have introduced Senate Bill 167 to honor Marine Corporal Tim W. Russell, a local war hero. The bill proposes to name a portion of State Route 60 in Erie County after Corporal Russell.

According to Senator Gavarone, Corporal Russell demonstrated exceptional courage during his time in Vietnam, where he saved numerous Americans on the front lines. She described him as a role model for the community and the state. Senator Manning also praised Corporal Russell, highlighting his dedication to keeping the country and communities safe. Manning emphasized that Russell's heroic actions in Vietnam and his service as a law enforcement officer at home have solidified his legacy as one of the nation's finest citizens.

Corporal Russell, a resident of Vermilion, served as a squad leader in the Vietnam War. During an attack on his headquarters by the Vietcong, he was knocked unconscious and woke up to find himself critically wounded and bleeding heavily from his limbs. Despite his injuries, Russell refused medical attention and instead directed his men's fire towards the enemy. His bravery and determination forced the Vietcong to retreat, saving their headquarters and their line.

In recognition of his valor, Corporal Russell was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart. In 2016, he was also inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame.

The introduction of Senate Bill 167 aims to honor Corporal Russell's extraordinary contributions and sacrifice. By naming a portion of State Route 60 after him, the legislation will serve as a lasting tribute to his bravery and selflessness.

The local community has expressed their support for the bill, recognizing the importance of honoring those who have served and sacrificed for their country. If the bill is passed, it will be a fitting tribute to Marine Corporal Tim W. Russell, a true hero who exemplifies the values of courage and selflessness.
