State Senator Theresa Gavarone | The Ohio Senate
State Senator Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green) paid tribute to Chancellor Randy Gardner for his dedicated service to the State of Ohio. Gardner, who is retiring from the Ohio Department of Higher Education at the end of the year, has had a remarkable career advocating for education and other important issues.
Gavarone commended Gardner's impressive track record as a legislator, stating, "For over 30 years as a legislator, Randy earned a reputation as one of the best in our state's history, fighting tirelessly for education, victims of crime, water quality, and many other issues." She further acknowledged his transition into the role of Chancellor in 2019, emphasizing his commitment to helping Ohio's next generation succeed.
Reflecting on Gardner's accomplishments, Gavarone expressed gratitude for his mentorship and friendship, noting that he has made significant contributions to advancing the state. She stated, "Randy is a mentor and friend who has given so much to move our state forward."
Gardner's journey in public service began when he was appointed to the Ohio House of Representatives at the young age of 26. Throughout his 33-year tenure in the Ohio House and Ohio Senate, he held various leadership positions and became a prominent advocate for education.
In 2019, Governor DeWine appointed Gardner as the Chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education. In this role, Gardner has overseen the state's public two-year and four-year institutions, as well as Ohio Technical Centers, while implementing the state's policies on higher education. However, Gardner's retirement from this position will be effective from January 1.
