State Rep. Roy Klopfenstein | The Ohio House of Representatives
State Representatives Jeff LaRe (R-Violet Twp.) and Shane Wilkin (R-Hillsboro) have introduced legislation aimed at expanding the definition of obstruction of justice in Ohio's law. The proposed bill would add language to the Ohio Revised Code to include "failure to follow lawful order from a law enforcement officer or diverting a law enforcement officer's attention" as constituting an obstruction of justice.
LaRe explained the motivation behind the bill, stating, "After seeing the events that took place at the Ohio Statehouse last summer, and the events occurring across the country that threaten the public and law enforcement officers, it was clear to Rep. Wilkin and I that something needed to be done." He emphasized the need to protect the brave men and women who work tirelessly to ensure public safety.
The legislation aims to safeguard both law enforcement officers and citizens. Wilkin stated, "The purpose of this bill is to not only protect police officers that serve the public every day but also to protect our citizens from any sort of harm." He expressed his belief that any legislation focused on protecting the public and Ohio's law enforcement officers is a step in the right direction.
If passed, the bill would make it a punishable crime for individuals to interfere with the duties of a law enforcement officer after a lawful order has been given. By expanding the definition of obstruction of justice, the proposed legislation seeks to deter any actions that hinder or divert the attention of law enforcement officers from carrying out their responsibilities.
Law enforcement officers across the state have shown support for the bill, recognizing the importance of protecting their ability to enforce the law and maintain public order. The proposed legislation aims to provide law enforcement officers with the necessary tools to carry out their duties effectively and without unnecessary interference.
With the introduction of this bill, Wilkin and LaRe are taking a proactive approach to address the safety concerns faced by law enforcement officers. By amending Ohio's law to include specific language on obstruction of justice, they hope to create a safer environment for both officers and the general public.
As the bill moves forward, it will be subject to review and discussion in the Ohio Statehouse. The representatives are optimistic that their colleagues will recognize the significance of this legislation and work together to ensure its passage. The protection of law enforcement officers and the preservation of public safety are key priorities for Wilkin and LaRe, and they remain committed to advancing this bill for the benefit of all Ohioans.
