University of Akron League-Best Eight Zips Garner All-MAC Men’s Soccer Honors

Led by sophomores Jonas Buechte (Rantigen, Germany), Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah) and Malik Henry (Hamilton, Ontario), junior Will Jackson (Hudson, Ohio) and sophomore Jason Shokalook (Erie, Pa.), who garnered First-Team All-Mid-American Conference men's soccer accolades, a league-best eight University of Akron players earned All-MAC honors when the league unveiled its 2022 award winners on Thursday, Nov. 10.


Juniors Johnny Fitzgerald (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Joel Sangwa (Phoenix, Ariz.) along with sophomore Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal (Carbondale, Ill.) rounded out the Zips' recipients pulling in second-team laurels.


Buechte has started all 18 of the Zips' games en route to earning First-Team All-MAC accolades for the initial time to help anchor an Akron defensive unit that has posted seven shutouts on the campaign. He owns a goal and three assists on the strength of 12 shots, including five on goal.


Hauling in All-MAC honors for the second time was Clapier, who has started all 17 games he has appeared in for Akron this fall. He leads the team in assists (7) and game-winners (3), while ranking second in goals (7), points (21), shots (35) and shots on goal (18). Clapier is rated second in the league in game-winners (.176), third in assists (.412), goals (.412) and points (1.24), fifth in shots on goal (1.06) and seventh in shots (2.06). In league-only games, he ranked fourth in assists (.625), sixth in points (1.13) and eighth in shots (1.63) per tilt.

Earning all-league honors for the second consecutive campaign was Henry, who has started 16 of Akron's 18 games en route to helping lead the Zips' defensive efforts to seven shutouts. Offensively, he has registered an assist, while adding a trio of shots on the season.


A team captain, Jackson garnered All-MAC accolades for the second time, having started 14 of the 16 games he has appeared in for Akron this season. He has helped direct an Zips' defensive unit that posted seven shutouts on the campaign, while adding three goals, a trio of assists and a pair of game-winning goals on the strength of 17 shots, including seven on goal.


Having started 16 of the 17 games he has appeared in for Akron this fall, Shokalook captured First-Team All-MAC accolades for the initial time on the strength of team-best marks in goals (9), points (24), shots (38) and shots on goal (22), while ranking second in assists (6) and game-winners (2). He leads the league in goals (.529), while rating second in points (1.41) and shots on goal (1.29), sixth in shots (2.24) and seventh in assists (.353) per contest. In league-only matches, he ranked first, second, second, second and seventh, respectively, in goals (.500), points (1.38), shots (2.50), shots on goal (1.38) and assists (.375) per outing.


Having appeared in all 18 games for Akron, including 15 starts, Fitzgerald elevated his game to another level this season en route to collecting Second-Team All-MAC honors for the first time. He has posted a trio of goals, while adding an assist on the strength of 19 shots, including 11 on goal and one game-winning tally.


Sangwa has provided an immediate impact on the Zips in his first season at Akron having started all 18 games to help spark the squad's defensive unit to post seven shutouts. He has tallied four goals on the strength of eight shots, including four on goal, while netting a pair of game-winning goals.


Wan Kamal has appeared in all 18 games for Akron, including 13 starts, en route to earning all-league honors for the first time. He has recorded a team-high seven assists, while tallying a goal on the strength of 13 shots, with five falling on frame. Wan Kamal is ranked sixth in the conference in assists (.389) per outing, while rating seventh in league-only affairs in assists per game (.375).
