State Representative Jim Hoops (R-Napoleon) has announced that the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Concurrent Resolution 13. This resolution, co-sponsored by Representative Phil Robinson (D-Solon), calls for the federal designation of Ohio’s Buckeye Trail as a National Scenic Trail.
The Buckeye Trail runs through Paulding, Defiance, and Henry Counties, following the Maumee River and passing through Defiance and Napoleon. The trail extends about 1,450 miles across 49 counties, 18 state parks, eight historical society properties, and Ohio’s only national forest.
Representative Hoops stated, “The Buckeye Trail showcases Ohio’s breathtaking landscapes and serves as a symbol of connection across the state.” He emphasized its role in unifying hikers, runners, cyclists, and casual walkers since 1959.
A National Scenic Trail designation would align the Buckeye Trail with other prestigious trails such as the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails. This status could lead to increased federal support, conservation efforts, visibility for the trail, and enhanced public engagement.
Robinson highlighted the bipartisan nature of this effort: “The passage of this Resolution is a strong example of bipartisan work to highlight the natural beauty of our great state.” He added that such a designation could bring economic benefits from national recognition.
If approved at higher levels, the National Park Service will conduct a comprehensive study to assess eligibility. This study will evaluate current conditions and gather public input from communities along the trail. Recommendations will be made to the U.S. Secretary of the Interior before reaching Congress.
House Concurrent Resolution 13 now awaits consideration by the Ohio Senate.
